AI is the UK energy sector’s untapped optimisation opportunity - BusinessGreen

The following article was published on BusinessGreen on Monday, 30 March 2026.

With grid pressures mounting and demand-side flexibility still underutilised, AI-driven optimisation may be one of the most undervalued levers in the UK's net zero transition, writes Gunjan Arora Programme Operations and Controls Lead at Energised Futures, Powered by Centrica.

While forecasting has become a visible success, the real breakthrough lies in the shift toward automated response. AI strengthens predictions, but optimisation engines turn those predictions into action. By automating how we charge EVs, store solar, and heat homes, we can reduce grid strain and lower emissions without placing the "cognitive load" on the consumer.

To reach this scale, Gunjan argues we must first overcome critical structural challenges, specifically the need for universal data digitisation, device interoperability, and robust safety guardrails to ensure AI simplifies the energy transition rather than adding to its complexity.
