DC Microgrids: Unlocking Grid‑Constrained Growth for UK Businesses

Jamie Harris

Electrical Research Engineer

Jamie’s interest in power networks and renewable technologies began whilst completing his MEng in Electrical Engineering at Durham University. He began his Centrica journey in 2023 on the summer internship and returned on the Engineering Graduate Scheme in October 2024.

Having joined Energised Futures in October 2025, Jamie is now focused on developing innovative electrical hardware solutions to accelerate the transition to net-zero.

Kelly Ching

Entrepreneur in Residence

With an MSC in Sustainable Resources from UCL, Kelly brings an innovative mindset and a mission-led approach to driving meaningful change in the energy sector. Her experience as a COP delegate deepened her passion for accelerating the energy transition and shaping initiatives that combine innovation, evidence, and real-world impact.

At Energised Futures, Kelly focuses on early-stage development of business opportunities emerging from research, helping to translate cutting-edge insights into practical pathways that support a sustainable energy future.

Eleanor Greenhalgh

Digital Communications Specialist

Eleanor is a communications specialist focused on advancing progress across environmental and development challenges. With experience spanning the UK government and the renewable energy sector, she uses strategic communications to highlight innovation and build the collaborations needed to decarbonise the energy system.

At Energised Futures, Eleanor translates complex technical research into clear, high‑impact narratives. Currently pursuing an MSc in Sustainable Development, she combines scientific curiosity with digital insight to ensure the team’s work is understood, shared, and accelerated.

Paddy Randall

Strategic Energy Innovation Analyst

Paddy has joined Energised Futures on his first rotation as part of Centrica’s Commercial Analyst Graduate Scheme.  He brings a strong commercial perspective to everthing we do, accelerating collaboration with strategic partners and shaping our ventures strategy.

Paddy is committed to making the transition to clean energy cost-effective for customers by aligning policy and innovative technologies with financial savings.

DC Microgrids: Unlocking Grid-Constrained Growth for UK Businesses

As businesses electrify, demand for electricity is growing, but securing additional grid capacity is becoming increasingly difficult. For sites looking to expand or decarbonise, getting more from the grid connection they already have is becoming increasingly important.

DC microgrids could offer a way forward.

By connecting technologies such as solar PV, battery storage and DC-powered equipment through a shared direct current network, DC microgrids can reduce unnecessary energy conversions and give businesses greater control over how much power they draw from the grid. For grid-constrained sites, that could help unlock electrification and growth without relying solely on securing a larger connection.

Our new white paper, DC Microgrids: Unlocking Grid-Constrained Growth for UK Businesses, explores where the opportunity lies, from data centres and EV charging hubs to industrial, logistics and healthcare sites. It looks at the commercial and technical case for DC, alongside real-world deployments already demonstrating reductions in energy use, power losses, peak demand and costs.

Inside the paper

We explore:

  • Why grid constraints are strengthening the case for DC microgrids
  • How DC microgrids work, and how they differ from conventional AC systems
  • Where the value comes from, including grid capacity, efficiency, cost and resilience
  • Which sectors could see the greatest near-term opportunity
  • What real-world DC microgrid deployments can tell us about their potential
