Founding Head of Energised Futures Ben Krikler, PhD.

A physicist and technologist turned social entrepreneur, Ben joined Centrica as Director of Research & Innovation in 2022 to accelerate research and innovation.  Fusing academia with entrepreneurship, Ben launched Energised Futures – powered by Centrica, in the summer of 2024. 

With a PhD from Imperial College London, working on the COMET experiment in Japan, and postdoc research with the University of Bristol, Ben pivoted from academia to entrepreneurialism, as co-founder and CEO of RemotelyGreen, a platform to make online events a truly sociable alternative to travel.

Bringing world-class research and visionary commercialism, Ben is leading the team with expertise and laser focus to truly accelerate a new energy future.

Meet the team

Gunjan Arora

Program Operations & Controls Lead

Gunjan drives operational strategy at Energised Futures, building the structures, rhythms, and financial controls needed to turn great ideas into even greater results.

With eight years of global experience and a background spanning fintech, logistics, and investment banking, she champions inclusive growth and high-performance delivery. 

Kiran Darji

Research Engineer

Kiran studied Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Manchester, where he developed a strong foundation in analytical thinking and computational modelling.

Now working under the Automation pillar at Energised Futures, Kiran is passionate about applying mathematical modelling, machine learning and AI to tackle energy challenges and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future. His work focuses on developing intelligent systems that enhance automation and decision-making in energy applications.

Matthew Girling

Commercial Analyst

With a background in History, Matthew brings a unique perspective to energy innovation. He applies his understanding of societal change and human behaviour to explore how people interact with energy systems and how those systems can evolve to better serve communities. 

At Energised Futures, Matthew focuses on making energy products and services more accessible and engaging, helping put people at the heart of the energy transition. 

 

Mindy Gold

Communications & Community Lead

A dynamic comms leader with 12+ years’ experience building purpose-led brands.

Mindy is focused on driving awareness for Energised Futures and engagement with key audiences and stakeholders. Mindy’s vision for Energised Futures is unapologetically ambitious, with an unwavering belief in the power and capability of the team. 

Jonas Van Gompel, PhD

Research Engineer

Jonas is a physicist and computer scientist with a PhD from Ghent University, focused on AI-driven energy solutions.

At Energised Futures, he’s optimising residential assets – like heat pumps, batteries, and EVs – to cut costs and emissions.  

While his work is rooted in research, his primary goal is to drive real-world impact by bridging the gap between innovation and practical deployment.

Jamie Harris

Electrical Research Engineer

Jamie’s interest in power networks and renewable technologies began whilst completing his MEng in Electrical Engineering at Durham University. He began his Centrica journey in 2023 on the summer internship and returned on the Engineering Graduate Scheme in October 2024. 

Having joined Energised Futures in October 2025, Jamie is now focused on developing innovative electrical hardware solutions to accelerate the transition to net-zero. 

Mahtab Kaffash, PhD

Technical Project Manager

With a PhD in Electrical Engineering from KU Leuven, Mahtab brings deep technical expertise to managing cutting-edge energy R&D.

In her role she leads collaborative projects that push the boundaries of flexibility in smart grids. Mahtab thrives on launching bold collaborations that unite expert teams and drive innovation toward a more sustainable future. 

Zara Khan

Quantitative Backend Engineer

Zara graduated in Computer Science from Royal Holloway, University of London, where she developed a strong interest in technological innovation and machine learning. She began her career with Centrica during her Year in Industry in Data Science and later joined the DTS Graduate Scheme. 

Now having completed her Graduate Scheme, Zara applies her strengths in software engineering and machine learning at Energised Futures, supporting research initiatives that drive a greener future.

Ajay Kumar Sampathirao, PhD

Quantitative Developer

Ajay specialises in optimisation, control systems, and software development for energy innovation.

With a PhD in computer science and decision making from IMT Lucca, and postdoc research at TU Berlin, he now supports the deployment of novel methods at Energised Futures to drive smarter, more responsive energy systems.

Arne Lescrauwaet

Research Engineer

Arne brings a strong computer science background with a specialisation in AI to support a greener, more sustainable future. He earned his MSc in Computer Science, majoring in AI, from the Open University in the Netherlands. His master’s thesis, conducted in collaboration with Energised Futures, focused on the application of diffusion models on smart meter data.  

Following his graduation Arne joined Energised Futures, continuing to explore innovative AI solutions for energy sustainability.  

Francesca Marchetti

Research Engineer

Francesca earned an integrated master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bath in 2025 where her research focused on improving turbocharger efficiency to reduce vehicle emissions. 

No joining us from Centrica’s DTS Graduate Scheme, Francesca applies her expertise to automation, connectivity, and flexibility within Energised Futures. She is particularly drawn to enhancing the efficiency of energy data flows, leveraging cloud-based solutions for scalable control, and optimising heat pump performance to drive smarter, more sustainable energy use.

Aleksei Mashlakov, PhD

Research & Innovation Manager

A second-gen electrical engineer with a PhD in energy markets, Aleksei leads research into energy flexibility and market innovation.

He’s driving next-gen grid solutions to power a smarter, greener, and more resilient energy future.

Harriet Nornoo

Project Manager

Harriet Nornoo is a passionate and results-driven Project Manager, where she leads innovation programmes that shape the future. Known for her curiosity, collaborative spirit, and ability to bring structure to complexity, Harriet thrives at the intersection of customer insight, data-driven strategy, and operational excellence. 

With a background spanning energy, healthcare, and education, she’s led record-breaking CX performance programmes, delivered improved service outcomes and regulatory compliance, and driven high-impact projects that translate strategy into measurable results.
 

Harriet is motivated by making a meaningful impact, whether that’s improving lives through better innovative services or inspiring teams to challenge the status quo and deliver bold ideas.

Paddy Randall

Strategic Energy Innovation Analyst

Paddy has joined Energised Futures on his first rotation as part of Centrica’s Commercial Analyst Graduate Scheme.  He brings a strong commercial perspective to everthing we do, accelerating collaboration with strategic partners and shaping our ventures strategy.

Paddy is committed to making the transition to clean energy cost-effective for customers by aligning policy and innovative technologies with financial savings. 

Alan Rodgers

Experience Strategist

An Experience Strategist bringing together behavioural science, research, and service strategy to design propositions and experiences that help innovation take root.

With experience across energy, aviation, and entertainment, Alan sits at the crossroads of ideas and people: shaping concepts; journeys; and choices that help both customers and businesses move forward together.

Thijs Peirelinck, PhD

Electrical Engineer

With dual MScs in Electrical Engineering and AI, and a PhD in reinforcement learning for demand response, Thijs is advancing smart control of residential energy assets.

At Energised Futures, he’s harnessing AI and optimisation to unlock flexibility, reshape energy markets, and accelerate the shift to renewables.

Bart Soluch

Software Engineer

Bart holds an integrated Master’s degree in Computer Science with Mathematics from the University of Leeds and has joined Energised Futures on rotation from Centrica’s DTS Graduate Scheme.

With experience in creating an indoor navigation app using a custom Wi-Fi Positioning System and augmented reality, as well as participating in Game Jams, Bart brings expertise in software development, agile methodologies, and user-focused design.

At Energised Futures Bart explores how we may apply emerging technologies to projects to drive innovation in the energy sector.

Ikechukwu Ukaegbu

Lead Technical Architect

Ike is a seasoned digital professional with expertise across multiple digital domains. He has successfully led the design, development, and deployment of digital solutions in different industries including smart buildings and industrial IoT.

He is passionate about software, data, connectivity, and hardware for smart and connected systems and how these systems can be used to drive digital transformation.

Fairouz Zobiri, PhD

Research Engineer

Fairouz is a control engineer and energy systems expert focused on unlocking smart, inclusive energy solutions.

She holds a PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Grenoble Alps and completed postdoc research at KU Leuven. At Energised Futures, she leads work on AI-driven modelling and community energy systems.
